My cover picture

To create my picture on my front cover I used my main character (John Lloyd De La Rosa) and set up a small stage and put the decks and speakers on it. I also used lighting to give it a nightclub/festival feel. When it comes to my final pictures I will use real decks, more decks, more lighting, costume and setting, this will give it the clean, realistic and festival finish.

evaluating my first attempts

Overall I think my first attempts of my cover page and contents page were very successful. They are very similar to how I imagined them to look. I used my plan to guide me into making them and I have stuck to the colour scheme and layout. I made up some cover lines which are similar to ones I found on the internet and they fit very well in on the cover page. When it comes to making my final pieces I will use these first attempts to guide me. When I make my final piece it will have a clean finish and a fresh flow throughout the pages.

The style of my charcter

Here are three styles of the type of clothes I'd like my main character to be wearing. I have chosen these styles because they are extremely modern and they are the types of clothing that many DJs wear

Making my masthead (2)

1- firstly I looked at Dafont.com to find a font that suited my genre of music.

2- The font 'Musicnet' suited my genre and I preferred it to the other fonts so I chose this one.

3- I put the font to say 'Pulse' and liked the look of it

4- I found a picture of a pulse in the electronic blue that suited with my colour scheme.

5- I then went onto a Photoshop software and changed the font to white and blended the font and the pulse together.

6- From this I have my final masthead which I am very happy with as it goes with my music genre very well in the way it looks and the way it sounds.

Producers of music magazines

On my design for my front cover I have my DJ at the front with the decks in front of him. This will automatically give the audience an idea of what the magazines about, I then have people in the back dancing with strobe lights shooting all over the page. I have decided to put my cover lines on the outsides so it doesn't distract people from the picture but they are noticeable. My Masthead covers most of the top left corner and it will capture the audiences eye straight away. My main story is above the DJ and I want this to stand out so the audience have an idea about what they are going to be reading about. On the top right corner I have a small cover line but it looks like its on a sticker. This is because I want it to look like its been slapped on there as its urgent and people need to look into it. My next steps will be to start developing my magazine by taking pictures.

Photoshop example

This is an example of how I hope to use photo-shop to develop my images to make them look more detailed and interesting. This will drag the audience in closer as there will be more objects and items to look at.

cover image ideas

These are some of the types of style of photos I would like to feature on my cover page and inside my magazine.  From my focus group I found that the target audience care about the appearance of who's on the cover so I will work hard to achieve a good, sophisticated look. I will achieve this my having a serious facial expression, good fashion, hairstyles and show some of the artists personality. My artist will be the main feature on the front cover but I also want a lot going on around them so it gives the audience a lot to look at. I want the audience to feel as if they are in a night club or at a music festival when looking at the front cover.

background scene ideas for my front cover

Front cover photoshoot plan

Shot- I will have a medium close up of my main character with decks in front of him

Pose- I will have my character looking into the camera with a serious facial expression

Location- I am going to have a plain background so I can Photoshop a nightclub scene into the back with strobe lights and people dancing.

appearance- My character will be wearing a white t-shirt or shirt with black jeans, watch and headphones. Their hair will be messy side parted.

After doing research on mastheads and finally coming up with a name for my magazine I have come up with this final masthead. I have linked my name 'pulse' to the electronic pulse passing through the word. I have decided to use the font 'MUSICNET' as it is very modern like my music genre. I have used the electric blue pulse as it strikes the eye when looking at it and it suits the music genre as strobe lights are often electric blue. For this Masthead i used photoshop and powerpoint to get the look i wanted. When it comes to shaping my magazine i will have my masthead in the top left corner as it is the first place a viewer will look when searching for the magazine they want. It will also leave space for extra headlines/pictures.

masthead breakdown

Font style for my masthead

I have narrowed the name of my magazine down to 'PULSE' and 'FUSION'. I have chosen these name as they are very modern names, they are catchy and they suit the genre of music. I have to choose between these four fonts, I have chosen these fonts because they are very futuristic and modern just like my genre of music which is house.

Music magazine name ideas

For this piece of work I listened to house music and picked out lyrics and sounds to help give me ideas to what to call my magazine. Above is what I gathered.
I will be using these two colors for the background of my magazine. I am using dark colors because they don't stand out and with the bright neon colors below on top of them it supports them to stand out. The brighter colors gives the magazine a nightclub feel to it as in nightclubs strobe lights and disco lights are extremely popular. So when you are reading the magazine it puts you In a setting. I used the information from my focus group to publish my color schemes.

Colour scheme for my magazine

Colour scheme

From my Focus group I have learnt the colours that I need to be using in my magazine. I have been advised to use a dark back ground with bright colours on top. E.g. Black or Navy background with bright colours like electric blue, lime greens and neon pinks and yellows on top. The Bright colours should be thin so they strike you and are very noticeable because they are so bright. I should use a bright white with a dark outline for my masthead.

Analysis of contents page

characters story (part 2)

John Lloyd decided to drop out of his university course despite concern from his father. In the summer after his first year at University he was offered the chance to perform at Coachella, one of the biggest festivals in America. John Lloyd took this chance and shocked the crowd with an outstanding performance.
The whole world was talking about him, he was featuring on the news, in magazines and filled social media and was constantly being watched on youtube and played on the radio. John Lloyd had only just started to believe what he could achieve. Despite all the fame he still has a very close relationship with his family and they now live in America with him not worrying about one single bill.
This is the astonishing story of how a young boy starved with poverty is now one of the most successful artists in the world.

characters story (part 1)

John Lloyd De La Rosa is a Filipino born boy with a Filipino Father and a British Mother. He was brought up in Manilla in a one roomed apartment. His mother didn’t work due to illness and his father was a part time electrician. They could only afford one meal a day and could just afford for John Lloyd to go to school. On weekends when John Lloyd was 11 he would often go out with his father and work with him to try and earn some extra money. John Lloyd was an extremely intelligent especially in Maths and science.
John Lloyds Aunty a teacher over in London knew his potential very much, her and her husband secretly saved for John Lloyds first year at university over in America at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles). In 2004 when John Lloyd was 14 he went out to work with his father at a music studio in the city. When they arrived they started to work. John Lloyd left his father to finish off the work whilst he went off for lunch. Whilst on his lunch John Lloyd sat with the owner of the studio and he started to show him the basics of becoming a DJ.
After a couple of hours of playing around with the sets the owner decided to give him one of his old sets he hasn’t used for years. John Lloyd takes the set home and every night after his schoolwork he starts to take it up as a hobby. After passing his A-levels with flying colours he is told by his aunty that he is going to UCLA to start a university course in Maths. When it came to moving away he persuaded his parents to let him take his sets. He was off, with a small suitcase, $50 and his decks.
When he arrived he started his course and carried on with his hobby of disk jockeying in the evenings. Other students started to notice his talent and before he knew it he was performing at house parties and local nightclubs with his own unique touch on house music. One night performing at a nightclub in LA he is noticed by a manager looking for a new artist to manage. John Lloyd accepted this offer and took on this role. He was getting many concerts and was earning around $400 a week, this then went to $2000 and before he knew it he was earning $10,000 a week in sell out concerts all over the country.

Indie rock

Although I am basing my music magazine around House music I also looked at some alternatives. Indie Rock was one of these options. Indie rock was very popular in the 90s and still is today. Acts like Kasabian, Artic Monkeys and Kaiser Chiefs perform big concerts all over the world in big music festivals. They attract very big crowds of all ages, mainly ranging from ages 18- 35. On the two magazine covers I have above I noticed the pictures of the acts Kasabian and Artic Monkeys aren’t very colourful, this is because indie rock music can be known to be quite gothic and gothic music is associated to being very loud and hard-core. The writing used isn’t very colourful either this also represents being gothic. On the NME magazine with Kasabian on the front the word ‘insane’ is used not only is the font put in a gothic way the word represents the type of music it is as many indie rock music fans would describe the concerts as being ‘insane’. I also noticed that in Indie rock magazines the masthead isn’t very big and most of the headlines are pushed towards the bottom of the cover page I believe this is because they want the picture to stand out.

Overview of my Magazine cover page and contents page

Currently in lessons we have had a task of creating our own school magazine cover and contents page. Before making my magazine i researched some school magazines so i had an idea of what i was going to create. Firstly i decided what I was going to base my magazine on, i decided on sports. Sports for students, sports outside of school and sports news. With my masthead I used a large bold font to capture the audiences eyesight from a distance so they knew exactly what they were about to read before picking it up. I used a black coloured font with a green background. I use the green background as a symbol of grass as grass is the main surface which most sports are played on. I use the Black and green colours throughout the magazine so the readers know they are reading the same magazine throughout and so it gives the magazine an identity. I also put a football as the 'O' in the word 'sports' this is used as a symbol to show a type of sport which is very popular at the school. In my first headline I used a friend to show a sense of achievement and an idea of the feeling of family.

For my main picture i used a picture of the front of the school and used a low camera shot to make the school look big and stand out. I used this picture so readers will know what the magazine will be about before even picking up the magazine. I put black boarders around this picture so it stands out. For my second headline i decided to use an interview as people enjoy reading about other peoples lives as it is very common in magazines. I based my interview headline around former Montsaye student and local boy Michael Jacobs who is currently a professional footballer at Wigan Athletic. I used him because it shows that talent has been and gone through the school and the school still want talent to thrive. At the bottom of my cover page I have some bullet points of what else is in the magazine, this will let the reader know what they are about to read without even turning a page.

On my contents page i have kept the bold writing and the black and green and i have also added 3 photos of sports facilities at our school, the swimming pool, the gym and the sports hall. This shows that the school care about our physical education as they have spent thousands on building these amazing facilities. I have listed my contents so it is easy to read and i have made the numbers bold so they stand out. If i was to do this task again i would use a picture of someone on my front cover and have more headlines.
